At least 21 people were
killed in Nigeria and many others injured when a suicide bomber attacked a
procession of Shiite followers heading to the northern city of Zaria.
“We
lost 21 followers on their procession to Zaria,” Muhammad Ture, leader of the
sect in the city of Kano, said by phone on Friday. The blast occurred in Samawa
village on the road from Kano to Zaria, he said.
A
second bomber was captured alive before he could detonate the explosive belt,
according to Ture.
The
Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, has stepped up suicide attacks across
northern Nigeria since troops retook most of the territory they held last year
and intensified the offensive to end the six-year-old insurgency.
